Hinterland-L. M. Brown

(Reviewed by Jeyran Main)

Exceptional

Hinterland is a fictional story written about family, love and the importance of a father’s love for his daughter. Nicholas has a five-year-old daughter named Kate. Kate’s life falls apart when her mother disappears, and Nicholas does not reveal the real reason that has happened. This causes a lot of friction and ultimately results in Kate running away. At the same time, Ina, Nicholas’s childhood best friend and neighbor, is an outstanding person in Nicholas’s life. With the added drama, she too finds herself in an unsettling place.

I found myself really drawn to the story. I really bonded with Kate and felt her pain. The want and need for answers were so apparent and vital for Kate. She needed to achieve some sort of balance in her life. Nicholas was an interesting character. His love for his daughter was admirable. The story discussed mental illness and had an exciting twist to it. I found it appealing and pleasing to read.

The story had a steady pace to it, and the literature was written well. I look forward to reading more from this author. I believe she has the potential to write exceptional books in the same genre.

I recommend Hinterland to people who like to read stories about mental health issues, schizophrenia, and family-oriented tales.
