Are We French Yet? Keith & Val’s Adventures in Provence – Keith Van Sickle

(Reviewed by Don Jung)

What would happen if you decided to divide your family life between two countries and live six months of the year in each place? Well, that’s what author Keith Van Sickle has done as he tells us how we can be American and French at the same time.

It’s an interesting transformation that many of us wish we could do but don’t know how to accomplish without hitting a lot of obstacles. Learning a foreign language for someone in their late 40’s is not an easy task, but Van Sickle relates to us step-by-step on how we can gradually fit into a new society.

What I like about the author is that he is willing to take chances and meet new and interesting people who make you feel at home from the first introduction. He and his wife learned the subtilties of French country living where you expect everything to go much slower than in America with our fast-paced lifestyle.

He makes mistakes along the way, but he finds that it creates more interesting and unusual situations that keep life exciting. He makes even the most mundane occurrences seem educational, from cooking to processing a car rental repair problem.

This is not a travelogue. Are We French Yet? Keith & Val’s Adventures in Provence is a book about seeking change in one’s life and opening the door to new experiences. You will enjoy this chronicle of life.
