Dance with the Clouds: Backpacking the World That Was – Carl B. Yong

(Reviewed by Christopher J. Lynch)

Exceptional

Dance with the Clouds by Carl B. Yong was a very enjoyable read and kept my interest from the first page to the last.

The book chronicles Yong’s around- the- world backpacking journey in the early 90’s and lands the reader in many exotic and far-flung locales. Yong has a great sense of pacing and I never felt the book bog down, no matter where in the world he was. The chapters are short, and you never get bored with the place you are in because Yong moves on to the next spot over the horizon before you ever have the chance.

He also keeps the narrative fresh as he doesn’t spend inordinate amounts of time and word count – as many travelogues do, on tedious details: “And then I brushed my teeth.” “And then I took out the trash.” Etc. Instead, Yong maintains a nice variety of description, action, and dialogue, both inner and outer.

All and all a very good book that I would heartily recommend.
