Everybody Wins (Except for the Losers): A Record Store Day Story – Steve Murphy

(Reviewed by Don Jung)

In this digital age, you would think that record stores are a thing of the past. But this particular record store is full of passionate employees who love what they do. After all, their world revolves around music.

So you can imagine the excitement building up to the annual vinyl record sales day at Snap Crackle Popsy Records. Everybody Wins (Except for the Losers) covers a period of twenty-four hours before and during the big event with the owner and his eclectic employees organizing and preparing for something special that only true music collectors would appreciate. They custom order certain albums and do a special stock-up based on requests from faithful customers who stand in line for hours just to purchase that special album.

You hear about the night before and the night’s clubbing to get in the mood for the record store’s big event. Each employee has special quirks and oddities that make you feel like it’s a family of misfits who all are focused on making music a way of life.

One of the performers at the record store event is pictured as successful and a fan favorite and yet at the end of the day you find that he is a quiet, financially broke alcoholic who is unhappy with his life. I wish that this story went into more depth on the other characters, but I guess at only eight-seven pages that would be impossible.

This novella will appeal to those seeking a light, quirky read filled with dark humor.
