Exposed in Edinburgh: The House Sitters Cozy Mysteries – Scarlett Moss

(Reviewed by Don Jung)

Exceptional

This is a delightful mystery of two Texans going to housesit in Edinburgh, Scotland, and discovering the cultural heritage of a faraway distant land. Alen is a sheriff and his wife Joan, a 911 dispatcher who both decide to retire. They sell their house and all their belongings to start anew phase of their life.

They meet the neighbors next door where the wife and her mother come from an aristocratic background while the husband is a commoner who marries up and gets to run the bank owned
by his father-in-law. As they get acquainted over the next few weeks, the husband discovers that Alen is a sheriff and asks him to get involved in a blackmail case. Alen then gets mixed up with an array of distinct and amusing characters and that’s where the fun begins.

Alen’s investigative skills are put to the test as he gets few clues interviewing the possible suspects. Then suddenly he’s being followed and the whole search begins unraveling in a surprising way.

This quick read has a whimsical tone as our Texans  try to adjust to their new surroundings. We, the readers, learn the culture along with them. They discover the subtleties in Scottish living as they go on tours and visit the various historical sites. The descriptions make you feel you are along on this ride. You get to taste the various foods they serve in Edinburgh and it’s not just fish and chips. They seem to enjoy eating items you would not find back home.

Exposed in Edinburgh is a fun read, especially for those who enjoy “cozy” mysteries and armchair travel. As an avid traveler, I’m looking forward to more in the “Housesitters Series”.
