In the Shadow of Gold: A Tale of the Lost Confederate Treasure – Michael Kenneth Smith

(Reviewed by Christopher J. Lynch)

Exceptional
Michael Kenneth Smith’s book, In the Shadow of Gold, is a historical thriller set during the end of the Civil War. It follows the parallel paths of a disgruntled Confederate midshipman intent on stealing the last remaining wealth of the Confederacy, a runaway slave seeking freedom, and the bizarre connections that tie them to a contemporary wealthy businessman. It is a book that would appeal to young and old, and to civil war buffs as well as neophytes.

It is a wonderful read and I felt that I was the one finding lost treasure – between the pages of the book. Smith’s characters are well drawn with just the right amount of flaws to keep you angry and frustrated with them, while simultaneously cheering them on. The pacing is great and the timing of alternating between the three main characters is spot on. The ending is also surprising and Smith pulls it off masterfully. I especially thought his talking points at the end of the book was a nice touch.

A very pleasant read by a very talented writer.
