Every year this time, I go into our UnderratedReads vault and pull out some chilling horror novels to share. However, I couldn’t find anything as frightening as what is happening now in real life.
As of this writing, COVID-19 has killed over 1,178,000 globally and over 229,000 in the U.S. alone. By the time this is posted, deaths will have soared. It seems that we’re in an alternative universe as Donald Trump holds huge campaign rallies with no attendees socially distanced and few wearing masks. Infection rates rise in these areas, due to his supporters’ ignorance and his carelessness and lack of regard for their lives. Not only are more of us dying, but more are losing their livelihoods due to this horrific pandemic.
Medical workers are risking their lives due to exposure to the virus in order to save us. Still, others who are trying to protect us are threatened by malicious actors. Dr. Anthony Fauci cannot leave his house without bodyguards. U.S. mayors and governors are continually threatened if they request the wearing of masks or temporary closing of businesses, in order to safeguard our health. (Look up the plot against Governor Gretchen Witmer). We all know where these thugs get their inspiration. Trump continues to up the rhetoric which endangers the lives of all Americans and refuses to denounce these threats.
The Trump administration cannot find the parents of over 545 migrant children. It is reported that the parents of two-thirds of these children were deported. That is the worst nightmare for any parent. Trump seeks the help of neo-fascists to “poll watch”, who are sure to intimidate minority voters on election day. This is all the while the FBI asserts that these organizations are the predominant terrorist threat to the U.S.
Fortunately, there can be an end to this horror story, and it depends on all of us no matter where we live on the globe. Do what you can to stop the spread of this virus. Resist hate and stand up for those who are oppressed or need help.
Americans, please vote! To the rest, please pray for us and stay safe.
