Shackles of the Storm – D. Kardenal & L. Kardenal

Exceptional
Shackles of the Storm is the first book in the Spirits of Seiran series. The story is set in the seaside port city of Kahlaran. The story begins with Zaira, the adopted daughter of a perfumer accused of a double murder alongside her foster-father. As they both flee, Zaira discovers a few things about herself and finds a friend, Ezair, who convinces her to stay and clear her name. The adventure then entices when Zaira is chased by a cult of strange men and can no longer hide her true nature.

I was instantly drawn to Zaira and found her character to be appealing. Her relationship with Ezair was balanced, and as plans kept changing, everything kept its pace with intriguing writing style. Since this book was the first in its series, I expected a lot of backstory and foundation to follow through with many more future books. Instead, the storyline focused on the matter and scenes. This didn’t take anything away from me enjoying the book, but it made me wonder how it would carry on in the series. The ending provided a satisfactory answer to my dilemma.

The literature was written with thought and consideration. It was apparent the author had cared about creating a compelling story. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read science fiction and fantasy.
