An UnderratedRead Revisited: Chill Run: An Eddie Barrow Mystery – Russell Brooks

(Reviewed by Don Jung)

#CommissionsEarned

Eddie Barrows wants to be an author, but he can’t get published. He loses his girlfriend, then his job and what else could go wrong? He goes to see his parents to get himself a morale boost but is dismayed to find they think he’s a failure. He is lost and consults his friends, Corey and Jordyn, on advice on what to do. This is when the novel really gets moving.

When desperate for money and in want of a change, what does our protagonist do? He plans a publicity stunt that backfires into an embezzlement murder scheme and everything that can go wrong does. In fact, it gets worse with each passing day. The fame he alluded to has got him on the run. This action-packed drama shows how an ordinary person must survive while maintaining his sanity.

The dialogue is simple and straight-forward, but you get to know the characters as if they
were your old high school buddies. They display their emotions with real feeling as they desperately try to figure out how to get out of their predicament. Each day becomes a
cliffhanger, keeping you in suspense on what will happen next.

How an ordinary citizen uses his wits to sidestep the police and uncover who committed
the murder is scary and spellbinding. And how can his family reconcile with him? Eddie thinks he is living on borrowed time, but he gets help in the most unlikely ways and uncovers one secret after another as he tries to find the truth. Right when you think that the ending is near, there’s another double-crossing twist that you don’t see coming.

Chill Run is one of the best thrillers that I’ve read in a long time. It’s a must-read for fans of suspense fiction.
