Citizens of Light – Sam Shelstad

You may wonder how the characters in this story function in everyday life, but that’s part of the charm of Citizens of Light.

Colleen Weagle is not proud of her past. As a teenage runaway, she was the perfect prey for a cult, and joined The Citizens of Light Rejuvenation Farm. When the leader was sent to jail, she went back home.

Now a widow still living with her mother, she works at a Toronto call center. Her dream is to write for a television series, but she has yet to complete a script. But her focus now becomes trying to find how her husband Leonard really died.

When she sees a newspaper photo of a strange man who attended the funeral, she is determined to track him down and get answers. The photo was taken at a Niagara Falls casino, so she and a co-worker set off to investigate Leonard’s death. That’s when the action starts, and there’s a lot of it. Could Leonard have been living a secret life? And worse, could he have been tied to organized crime?

There’s so much going on here: video games, jealous husbands, haunted houses, in addition to the cult. You may think that all of this is irrelevant, but trust me, most of it isn’t.

This story is full of offbeat humor, the source being that no one in the story seems to be that sharp and therefore no one is able to think logically.

Citizens of Light will keep you guessing until the very end, and you’ll enjoy every minute of this escapade.
