The Proud & the Dumb – Bob Freville

(Reviewed by JD Jung)

“Don’t get all bogged down in so-called facts. That’s the whole problem.”

A gang of racist, homophobic, xenophobic, misogynistic (I could go on and on), white nationalists regularly hang out at the Swindlehurst Diner. It’s not in the Midwest or Southern U.S. It’s along the Montauk Hwy in Suffolk County, Long Island.

In any event, as these men spout off their usual ignorant rants, they realize that one of their “brothers” doesn’t totally agree with them. This prompts a few to suspect that he must be a traitor and forcefully taken care of.

The Proud & The Dumb exploits a lot of stereotypes, but the dialogue will still keep you in stitches. Nothing is subtle, but you may miss some of the offhanded remarks.
It all adds to the fun though, and there’s a surprise at the end.

Though this novella is hilarious and may seem a little over the top, take caution. These are scary times. We’ve all seen those “Trumper on the street” interviews where right-wing white Americans take out their misplaced anger on liberals and cultural shifts in our society. You may even know a few of them.

Please be on guard against hate and “alternative facts” but enjoy this forty-one-page diversion.
