When I started reading Within the Walls, I expected a story about a kidnapping, but it turned out to be much more psychologically complex. Actress Sophie Hartnet is abducted on her way back to her Paris hotel by Vlad, a stalker who takes her to a remote house. His goal isn’t simply to hold her captive—he wants to strip away the carefully constructed image she has presented to the world and try to expose her real self.
What interested me was Sophie’s realization that, in many ways, her entire life had been a performance. Her adoring husband, children, career, and even the people around her had all helped shape who she was supposed to be. The real violation, for Sophie, wasn’t necessarily the abduction—it was being forced to confront how much of her identity had been curated by others.
I appreciated that Sophie’s character is thoroughly developed, making her decisions believable rather than leaving me questioning her motivations. Though Vlad also undergoes some unexpected self-discovery, I feel that his character could have been explored further. However, the novel kept me turning the pages, eager to find out how it would all end.
Within the Walls is an erotic thriller with a very slow build. For me, the pacing was slower than I would have liked, but readers who enjoy sensual, non-graphic erotic fiction that focuses more on psychology than explicit detail may find this an intriguing and thoughtful read.
